Destiny is getting a ‘full game sequel’ in 2017, Activision confirms

Activision Blizzard has confirmed a sequel to Destiny is in the works, with a release planned for next year.

In its earnings report, the gaming giant, says the follow up to 2014’s Bungie-developed online-based shooter title will be a “full game sequel.”

Just last month reports claimed the successor would not be released in 2016 as Activision and Halo developer Bungie had originally planned, which would tie into today’s news.

Whether the decision to wait until 2017 is by design or delay, the void will be filled by a “large new expansion” for the original game.

In the earnings report, the company wrote: “Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017.”

It’ll be the first major addition since the well-received The Taken King expansion, which went a long way towards fulfilling the initial hype surrounding the new IP, arrived last autumn.

In reviewing the expansion, our reviewer Stuart Andrews wrote: “The Taken King isn’t so much a Destiny expansion as a thorough reworking, building on the foundations laid by the version 2.0 update to make the endgame both more compelling and more accessible.

“The campaign itself is strong, varied and engaging, introducing a great new setting that should fuel quests and strikes for months to come. Come back Guardians, and bring your buddies with you – Bungie looks to have delivered the Destiny we’ve all been waiting for.”

Let’s hope this year’s expansion can build further on The Taken King’s fine work.

Earlier today it emerged Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs will also be getting a sequel in 2017. Which are you most intrigued by? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
