BT confirmed to be in talks to buy EE

It’s been confirmed that BT isn’t just focusing on a prospective O2 buyout – it’s also in talks with EE.

Earlier in the week BT confirmed that preliminary talks were underway with O2 with a view to BT buying back the mobile network it sold to Telefonica some nine years ago.

Now it’s been confirmed that O2 isn’t the only object of BT’s mobile affections. It had been rumoured that EE was also in discussions with BT, and now we’ve had direct confirmation from one of the parties involved.

In a short press release, Deutsche Telekom and Orange (the co-owners of EE) have confirmed that they are having “highly preliminary exploratory discussions with British Telecom” over a possible purchase.

The press release notes that “it is too early to state whether any transaction may occur,” but the fact that such a move is even being contemplated throws up some intriguing questions.

Perhaps the main question here is, would BT even be allowed to purchase EE? After all, it would mean the UK’s biggest landline and broadband provider buying the UK’s biggest mobile network. Surely Ofcom would have something to say about that.

Whether BT opts to purchase O2 or the larger EE, there’s no doubting that it’s after a slice of the mobile network pie. With key UK rivals such as Virgin Media and Talk Talk offering alluring ‘quad-play’ options – thats TV, broadband, mobile, and landline in one package – it’s not hard to see why.
