AMD demos new Temash and Kabini – first quad-core x86 SoCs

AMD has chosen CES 2013 to demo its first true system on chip (SoC) APUs, which are codenamed Temash and Kabini.

AMD hopes the new chips, which will be the first quad-core x86 SoCs on the market, will be finding there way into tablet and laptop designs that will likely arrive in shops in around about a years time.

“With a groundbreaking new APU line-up in 2013, AMD is poised to win
in high-growth consumer segments,” said Lisa Su, senior vice president
and general manager, AMD Global Business Units. “We are developing
technologies with end users in mind – to bring true surround computing
and immersive experiences to our everyday lives. It is exciting to bring
our industry-leading APU technologies to market, including the
industry’s first x86 quad-core SoC, while building on our leadership in
graphics and gaming.”

AMD Temash Specs
Temash is the smaller of the two designs and is destined for tablets and hybrid tablet/laptop designs akin to the Asus Vivo. AMD expects Temash to be the highest-performance SoC on the market for these types of devices, with 100% more graphics processing power than its predecessor codenamed Hondo.

AMD Kabini Specs
Kabini, meanwhile, is aimed at conventional slim laptop designs where there’s room for a bit more performance and slightly less focus on battery life, though AMD is still keen to point out Kabini will be very low-power. It will be available in both dual- and quad-core designs and is expected to deliver over 50% more performance than its predecessor, codenamed Brazos 2.0.

Demonstrations at CES included a range of leading-edge applications and games on a “Kabini”-based ultrathin notebook and a “Temash”-based performance tablet and hybrid notebook, though AMD has not provided comparative performance numbers for how these new chips compare to either Intel’s rival chips nor those based on ARM architectures.
AMD Richland
AMD also announced it is shipping to partners its new codename Richland APU, which is an AMD A-Series chip that delivers 40% more performance. It also announced the follow up to Richland will be the 28nm APU codenamed Kaveri, which is expected to ship in the seconds half of 2013.

AMD Radeon HD 8000M
AMD’s final announcement was that its latest AMD Radeon HD 8000M Series of mobile (i.e. laptop) graphics cards are now shipping to OEMs. The new cards aren’t expected to offer huge leaps in performance but will all offer DirectX 11.1 support for optimal Windows 8 compatibility.
