Amazon takes on Microsoft and Google with new WorkMail service

For years we’ve relied on Amazon to deliver our parcels safely and on time. Now the firm is making a pitch to do the same for your work email with its brand new WorkMail client, announced on Wednesday.

The encrypted email service, which is exclusively for business use, is charging $4 a head for every account, as it seeks to take on Microsoft and Google.

Amazon’s pricing is in line with Microsoft Office 365 and Google’s Apps for Work platform which give access to email, productivity apps and a calendar.

A Forbes report (via TechCrunch) claims companies can choose where the data is stored and will also be able to manage the encryption keys for the data.

Emails will be encrypted when they leave the outbox and decrypted at the other end, which could be a boon for businesses and employees in the post-Snowden world.

The service is powered by Amazon’s Web Services division and is the first real evidence of the company looking to provide user-facing solutions rather than help at the back end of things.

WorkMail will have a web client, but Amazon is intending on integrating with other clients such as Microsoft Outlook. The service will launch in the United States in the second quarter of the year.
