4G now available to half of UK through EE

EE has revealed that its 4G service currently covers 50 per cent of the UK following another bout of roll-outs across the country.

The latest phase of this roll-out brings 4G LTE network coverage to 13
new towns and cities. These include Bradford, Bingley, Doncaster,
Dudley, Harpenden, Leicester, Lichfield, Loughborough, Luton, Reading,
Shipley, St Albans and West Bromwich.

Everything Everywhere (now known simply as EE) represents a combined venture between Orange and T-Mobile, and is currently the only operator offering a 4G service in the UK.

It launched its 4G service across 11 UK cities in October of last year. It has since expanded this coverage to 50 cities in the following five months, according to a recent press release.

EE reckons that this makes its 4G coverage available to 50 per cent of the UK population, which means that it’s ahead of schedule in its bid for 98 per cent UK 4G coverage by the end of 2014.

4G in the UK
EE plans to roll 4G out to 30 more UK towns and cities by the end of June, which will bring the total to 80.

It’s easy to see why EE is in a hurry to get wide-reaching 4G coverage with O2’s own 4G service planned for the summer and Vodafone’s (which acquired the biggest chunk of the 4G network spectrum at auction) for “later this year.”

EE’s ‘Superfast’ 4G offering is approximately five times faster than 3G, with average speeds of 16Mbps and peak speeds of 50Mbps. It’s currently supported by an array of high-end smartphones, including the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the new HTC One.
