How to set up a Spotify Duo account: Spotify’s subscription plan for couples explained

Spotify has launched Spotify Duo, a subscription plan for couples that gives each partner their own premium account under one lowered bill. Here’s how to get it set up.

You’ll continue to get all of your usual playlists and recommendations, along with a new, and according to Spotify exclusive, Duo Mix playlist. This is a regularly updated playlist based on your shared listening history. The playlist has two modes – Chill and Upbeat – to fit different moods and there is a button to remove explicit songs if there are kids around.

Duo Mix is also optional, so if you’ve been listening to a lot of Disney soundtracks recently, you can simply opt out and your partner never has to know.

The plan costs £12.99/$12.99 for two premium accounts and can be cancelled at any point, just like all of the other Spotify. Considering a single premium account costs £9.99/$9.99, we’d say that’s a pretty good deal.

How to set up a Spotify Duo account:

  • Sign up for Spotify or log in with an existing account
  • Visit your ‘Account’ page to change your subscription
  • Invite another person to join Duo by email, WhatsApp, or something else
  • Wait for them to accept the invitation and confirm that they live at the same address

It’s important to note that the person who sets up the account will be stuck with the whole bill, so you’ll have to work out splitting the cost amongst yourselves.

But, what if you already have your Premium account set up the way you like it? Don’t worry, all of your music, playlists and recommendations will automatically be transferred over to your Duo account. The only thing that’ll see go is about £3.50 from your usual bill – provided you split the cost evenly.

“Premium Duo includes our extensive music and podcast catalog and everything users love about Spotify Premium”, said Spotify Chief Freemium Business Officer Alex Norström.

“With two individual Premium accounts, you can both listen independently, uninterrupted, and get all of your personalized playlists and features tailored just for you. We are thrilled to bring this unique Spotify Premium plan to even more markets around the world”.
