Intelligent System’s Advance Wars franchise has been established in Japan since the days of the NES (known over there as the Famicom, hence the original title, Famicom Wars), but it wasn’t until the release of the Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s that western players got their first taste of this sterling series.

Turn-based military strategy has rarely been this colourful and visually alluring, but Advance Wars and its sequel Black Hole Rising offer some serious challenge.

The second game just about outshines the first, and while the Wii U version lacks that all-important portability (one of the perks of the original was being able to whip your GBA out on the bus to tackle a tricky level), the classic gameplay is plain to see. DS sequels would follow, but sadly the series has been dormant for too long now.
