The Amazfit is Xiaomi’s new affordable smartwatch

Earlier this month, rumours began to circulate about a new smartwatch offering from Chinese brand Xiaomi, with some speculating the company would break from tradition and attach a premium price to the device.

But now, Xiaomi, best known for its affordable smartphone range, has unveiled the smartwatch in the form of the Amazfit, and it comes with a reassuringly low price tag.

The company launched a smartwatch for kids earlier this year, and has now followed it up with the fitness-focused Amazefit.

Manufactured by Xiaomi’s sub-brand Huami, which also makes the Mi Band, the new wearable comes with all the standard fitness tracking features you’d expect, such as the built-in heart rate sensor.

It will work with the Mi Fit app to track your statistics and activity, and features built-in GPS via a 28nm GPS sensor.

And although it doesn’t run on Android Wear, the Amazefit will still allow you to get notifications from your smartphone.

Elsewhere, there’s a 1.34-inch display with a 300 x 300 resolution, and the whole thing is powered by a 1.2GHz processor backed up by 512MB RAM.

There’s also 4GB of internal storage and Xiaomi says the 200mAh battery will last five days on a full charge, or 30 hours with GPS enabled.

And with a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel and swappable bands, overall the whole thing looks to be a decent offering from the Chinese firm.

So, what about that all-important price? Well, the Amazfit has been announced at 799 Yuan, which works out to about $120 or £90.

However, it doesn’t look like the device will make it outside of China at this point, though we’re hoping Xiaomi starts shipping these things internationally soon.
