Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming to Netflix – but only in Canada

If you’re skipping the Star Wars; The Force Awakens cinema release for Netflix home viewing, we’ve got good news for you – but only if you’re in Canada.

It turns out that only the Canadian version of Netflix will have the new Star Wars movie available for streaming in 2016, as reported by Variety.

In the US – spiritual home of Star Wars – the movie won’t be available unless they fork out for a subscription to Starz instead.

That’s because Disney has an exclusive deal with Starz that covers all Disney movies released through to the end of 2015.

Much to the chagrin of Netflix, Star Wars: The Force Awakens lands just 13 days short of the deadline.

So why does Canada get the goods? Fortunately for the company, Netflix has a deal with Disney for movies released starting in 2015 for the region.

Netflix will have access to the movie roughly eight months after the movie leaves theatres.

Disney currently controls rights to all of the Star Wars movies, except for the 1977 original, which is owned by 21st Century Fox.

The movie is slated for a December 18 theatrical debut, and will land as the seventh major entry of the series.
