Spotify has announced the launch of an app for Google’s range of Android Wear smart watches.
The wrist-loaded iteration of the music streaming service will enable users to browse and play music on the go, without ever reaching for their phones.
There’s access to the user’s playlists, songs and albums through the Your Music section, while the familiar Browse tab will allow for the discovery of new tunes.
The app still requires the phone for music playback, while there’s no way to store offline playlists on the watch itself, so it’s little more than a remote control at this point.
The arrival of Spotify on Android Wear comes with Google confirming there are now more than 4,000 dedicated apps available for the platform.
A forthcoming Android Wear update, detailed at Google I/O today, features a new app launcher, an emoji recognition tool and the arrival of Always On apps. There’s also the addition of wrist gestures for devices like the Moto 360 and LG G Watch, which will allow users to scroll simply by twisting their wrists.

Of course, that may all change during the WWDC conference scheduled for June 8, but at the moment, with a rollout for Android Wear planned throughout June, it looks like Google will be in there first.
With regards to the Apple Watch, a Spotify representative told TrustedReviews: “We’re always testing new features and platforms to improve our service. We don’t have any more information to share right now – but as soon as we do, we’ll let you know.”
