Spotify founder doesn’t mind being second to Apple Music

Spotify has revealed it doesn’t care whether it keeps top spot in the music streaming industry as Apple Music readies for launch.

Currently, Spotify is the streaming sector’s market leader by a long way, but the fast-approaching launch of Apple Music could change that.

However, Spotify founder Daniel Ek has revealed the possibility of Apple dominating the sector is a non-issue.

To me it is enough to be among the top three,” said Ek. “But right now we have an advantage of being the number one in music.”

It’s an interesting stance from Spotify, particularly as the company showed its strength yesterday with the release of its subscriber figures.

Spotify revealed it had 20 million paying members, with a total 75 million active users.

However, a recent report suggested Apple might be eyeing up 100 million total subscribers for Apple Music, which would dwarf Spotify’s existing user-base.

Apple announced its music streaming service earlier this week at the company’s annual World Wide Developer Conference.

It plans to launch the service across iOS and Android, and will include a dedicated 24/7 radio station called Beats 1 in the package.

Apple Music will go live for Apple devices at the end of the month, while the Android version is due to roll out this autumn.
