Sony Xperia Z3 Lollipop update coming this week?

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Sony has announced the Xperia Z3 smartphone will be finally be receiving the Lollipop update, new reports suggest.

Two Italian news sites – AndroidBlog and TuttoAndroid – claim Sony used Mobile World Congress 2015 to confirm the software update was imminent.

The update will reportedly roll out across the whole of Europe at some point within the next five days, although it’s not yet clear exactly when.

We’ve known the Android 5.0 update has been nigh for a while now, with Sony itself confirming the software would land in March.

There’s also been evidence that the software has been certified in various regions, which again suggests an imminent roll out.

We’ve asked Sony for a comment on whether these latest reports are true, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the over-the-air upgrade land any day now.

It’s not yet clear whether this roll out will apply just to the flagship Xperia Z3 device, or all Xperia series handsets just yet.

Unfortunately for many, this update has come frustratingly late. Sony is one of the latest major OEMs to roll out the Android 5.0 upgrade, a software package we first saw back in September last year.

Manufaturers typically take some time after the source code is released to make their own tweaks to the software, so it’s expected we’ll see a Sony Xperia skin rather than the stock Lollipop we’ve seen courtesy of Google.

Some small Lollipop updates have already been pushed to Xperia Z3 handsets, including a material design Walkman app revamp, and lockscreen notifications.

We’ll update this article if Sony confirms the roll out.
