Sony has announced its Action Camera is being given a 2013 update during its IFA 2013 press conference.

Revealing that the Action Camera HDR-AS30V will be made smaller and lighter, the GoPro rival will also get GPS connectivity, a wrist-worn LiveView remote and a thinner waterproof housing.

Sony Action Camera HDR-AS30V Features

Packing a 16.8-megapixel 1/2.3 type Exmor R CMOS sensor, the new Action Camera can record Full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution video and comes in-built with Sony SteadyShot image stabilisation technology.

Users can shot in 50fps or 60fps speeds, or opt for two slow-mo modes for specific action footage.

It features a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar F2.8 lens with a 170-degree field of view for dramatic videos, but this is reduced to 120-degrees with SteadyShot turned on.

The Action Camera HDR-AS30V can also take 11.9-megapixel still shots as well, even capable of taking snaps upside down.

There is Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, with the latter used to connect the Action Camera to the optional LiveView remote accessory.

The RM-LVR1 Live-View Remote is a wrist-worn device that allows users to view the footage as its recording and control the Action Camera wirelessly. Sony suggests this is especially useful when the camera is placed somewhere a little more inaccessible.

Featuring large buttons, the Live-View remote is easy to operate even when using with gloves on.

Sony has also slimmed down the waterproof housing for the Action Camera HDR-AS30V, making it 35 per cent lighter and 25 per cent slimmer than the previous model.

Users can also purchase a whole range of optional extras, including a chest mount harness, roll bar mount, head mount, float, suction cup mount and dog harness.

Sony Action Camera HDR-AS30V Release Date and Price

Available from the end of September in the UK, the Sony Action Camera HDR-AS30V will retail for £260.
