Sony has unveiled the latest addition to its DSLR range, with the Sony a77 II playing host to some serious autofocus credentials.

Said to boast the “world’s highest phase-detection AF point count,” the new Sony a77 II packs a 79-point autofocus system alongside a 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor.

“From dynamic sports to the sudden flutter of a started bird: the new a77 II stays locked right on target, frame after crisply-focused frame,” Sony said of its latest high-end camera offering.

Sony a77 II Features
Compatible with Sony’s A-mount lens range, this interchangeable lens snapper sees its 24.3-megapixel Exmor image sensor partnered with a Bionz X processor and is capable of capturing JPEG or RAW images.

With the 79-point AF system lining up as the a77 II’s party piece, the camera features a broad array of focussing options. Wide, zonal, flexible spot and centre focus options are joined by expanded flexible spot and lock-on capabilities.

With an ISO range of 100-25600, the Sony a77 II sports a magnesium body with dust and moisture-resistant seals, meaning it should stand up to shoots in some if the more challenging of environments. With a battery on board the a77 II weighs in at 726g.

As well as featuring a 1.3cm OLED XGA electronic viewfinder, the a77 II’s 7.5cm LCD display offers more than just on the fly image playback. With a 3-way tilt mechanism, the screen can let you better frame shots while shooting at tight, awkward angles.

As we have seen from many of Sony’s recent camera offerings, the a77 II features some strong connectivity options with inbuilt Wi-Fi and NFC meaning you can control the camera via your connected smartphone.

Sony a77 II Release Date and Price
Although an exact Sony a77 II release date has still to be announced, the Japanese giant has confirmed the camera will be available on general sale in Europe “from summer 2014.” Pricing is still to be confirmed.
