Sony 6.44-inch 1080p smartphone in the works?

A leaked component photograph suggests that Sony could be developing a huge smartphone-tablet hybrid with a 6.44-inch display.

The above picture was leaked onto Chinese-language Digi-Wo forum. The person that provided the image of the outer screen component claims that it’s for a Sony smartphone with a 6.44-inch 1080p display.

Sony recently launched the 5-inch Sony Xperia Z at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but that ‘only’ sported a 5-inch 1080p display. This seems set to trump the likes of the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and – more pertinently – the apparently 6.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Whether this device proves to be fake or real – or even a prototype that never makes it to market – it certainly adopts the same design approach that Sony has been taking with the aforementioned Sony Xperia Z and the recently revealed Sony Xperia Tablet Z. It has the same minimalistic rectangular slab appearance.

There have been no corroborating reports to suggest that this mystery Sony device is close to a release, so even if accurate we might not be seeing the device launched any time soon.

Having said that, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for an oversized Sony smartphone at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which kicks off in a little over a month.

What do you think? Would a Sony-made super-sized smartphone appeal to you? Or does their current black-rectangle design approach leave you cold next to Samsung’s curvy offerings? Let us know via the Trusted Reviews Twitter and Facebook feeds, or simply use the comments box below.
