Skylanders Battlecast announced as themed card battler

Skylanders Battlecast has been announced by Blizzard as a themed free-to-play mobile card battler.

Blizzard, a subsidiary of Activision, is setting out to create a Hearthstone-style card battle for the Skylanders franchise on mobile.

It’s set within the Skylanders universe, but will be totally free-to-play on mobile when it is launched in 2015 on the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.

Skylanders Battlecast will feature strategic card combat, online PvP, a single-player campaign and of course collectability.

Blizzard is hoping it’ll appeal to Skylanders fans as well as card battle enthusiasts.

You’ll need to create your team and build the ultimate deck for battle, using strategic card combinations to become the Battlecast champion.

“Built from the ground up to bring Skylanders to life on mobile devices, Skylanders Battlecast combines physical card play wiht mobile gaming in an all new way,” explained Eric Hirshberg, CEO at Activision. “This is our biggest investment, and one of our most magical ideas yet, for the Skylanders franchise on mobile.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be Skylanders without a toys-to-life spin. Players will be able to buy physical card packs in stores, or digital card packs in-game. You’ll be able to scan the cards and watch them come to life in Battlecast.

If you scan two character cards you’ll create an animated duel that you’ll be able to interact with too.

“We are bringing physical cards to life in an exiting new way. Activision has assembled a team of experts across video game design, physical card game design, pro card players and top card artists to develop an amazing new experience,” added Josh Taub, Senior VP of Product Management at Activision.

“With Skylanders Battlecast, fans can expect the amazing creativity, innovation and fun that Skylanders games are known for delivering.”
