Samsung Galaxy S4 Battery Problems: Samsung offers free battery replacements

In the wake of Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues coming to light, Samsung has promised free replacement batteries to all those affected.

With reports last week revealing that some networks are seeing 30 per cent return rates of Samsung’s latest flagship phone due to continuing Samsung Galaxy S4 battery problems, the manufacturer has promised to rectify the issue with free replacement batteries.

In a statement provided to TrustedReviews, Samsung has stated: "We are aware of this issue, which has affected a limited number of customers.”

An official spokesperson for the company added: “We ask all affected customers to please visit their nearest Samsung Electronics service centre, where they can receive a replacement battery for free of charge. We remain committed to providing the best possible user experience for our customers."

Despite the phone having only been on sale for six months, reports out of Germany last week claimed that a number of Samsung Galaxy S4 owners have already been reporting issues with severe battery drain and even swollen batteries.

“A trusted contact who is sitting right at the source with a German provider confirms that the current confirmations are due to a faulty battery with the Galaxy S4,” the German reports stated.

Although Samsung’s promise to offer free replacement batteries is sure to appease those affected by the Samsung Galaxy S4 battery problems, the continuing issues which appear to be affecting a large number of the handset’s owners is sure to be a concern for many others.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 battery is a 2600mAh Lithium-Ion offering. Although all portable gadgets suffer from battery degradation over many years of use, the speed in which the Samsung Galaxy S4 has encountered this problem has surprised many.

samsung should also check out the the s4 mini, which is I think is a worst performing product by samsung...it has serious network issues...I can hope only for some updates...

I have been suffering with battery badly draining intermittently over the last couple of weeks and having check ed today I can see I have a swollen battery. Today I have phoned Samsung UK support, they say its a known issue and I can get a free replacement by either sending the phone away and being without it for 7-10 days or going to a local service centre (nearest is about 25 miles away). Neither option is great for me but hopefully will resolve this.

Yes I too have experienced this issue. As I can say that in the charging mode too the back panel gets heated which in other mobiles I haven't face this problem.

Ive just been to a "samsung service center" in the phone house, cuatro caminos shopping mall, A Coruna Spain. And they said they must send the whole phone which might be replaced, from experience replacements are only someone elses repaired phone with different problems, so still no real solution for this one however its either Samsung or apple... I'll gladly buy my own battery.

yes I have battery problems and its beginning to get swollen and it just switches off sometimes when trying to open an app while doing something else

My battery became so swollen that the back-cover buckled.
I went back to the very same Samsung store where i had purchased it not more than a week and a half before. When i enter the store and a man walks up to me i start saying:
"-My battery it´s--" to which he interrupts me and say "-swollen, right? Yes you have to get a new one. We have them over there for sale." He pinted to were the accessories were and continued "you shouldn´t let it charge more than three hours at a time. That is why the battery becomes like that. We have had many of our customers with the same issue."

I was so angry that i probably did best in biting my lip, 3 hours at a time? Many customers with the same issue?

If there´s someone that would be in the wrong it´s the staff in this case.

I´m not saying that a cardealership should have to tell their customers not to check the amount of fuel in the tank by lighting a match. Or a soldier to stare down the barrel of his weapon to see why it jammed.

That is slightly selfexplanatory (for most people)
But if you sell a device that you are aware of that could burst apart/in flames/leaks acid liquids, you:

A: pull it from the shelves asap until HQ reports about a solution.
B: Replace the batteries and send the defect to R&D or HQ for examination.
C: Inform the customer that there could be a possible risk in using the stock-battery and offer a discounted replacement battery.

But thats just my thoughts

Yes, battery is discharging very fast twice a day needs to charge which is very pain full thing. I have battery problem I need a new battery.

Samsung, like their batteries, are becoming over stretched with a bloated product range and need to stop going after quantity and focus on quality.

I have had no problem with my Samsung s4 except the initial problem with tethering but that disappeared after the first firmware update. Battery gives good life. I charge all night and use it during the day. Sometimes I use a battery pack since I do a lot of video playing on my phone. Tethering also drains the battery quickly. I am happy with my purchase. I previously had an S2 and an iPhone 4. The S2 was great that is why I have the S4. Samsung make many models because it's difficult to make a phone that is suitable for all users. We are all different and have different budgets and needs.

No battery probs with my S4, but had to return it for rectification because when phone vibrated the speaker buzzed/rattled, ok now but was disappointed at time because of cost of phone!

Handy if you live near a service center I suppose. If you don't, what then? Should they not be mailing them out or supplying spares to the retail stores that sell the phone?

It's a good point. Samsung doesn't have the retail presence of Apple, though. I suspect they'll either do as you suggest, or you may have to send your phone in. I imagine they'll want to examine to dodgy batteries to work out the cause.

Its really strange. My battery drains in 10 mins if I am on internet but otherwise works just fine. You think its the battery problem or could there be a problem with anything else

I've had my S4 for a couple of weeks and have noticed that the battery is draining very quickly. I'm hardly using it whilst at work, yet it will not last me kong enough to get me home. Not impressed!

I brought my 4 months old Samsung S4 to an authorized Samsung repair center here in the Philippines. The service reception said they will replace my S4's swollen battery, but I have to leave my phone for 3 days for reprogramming. Is there a need to reprogram my phone, or can they just replace my S4's battery?

My Galaxy S4 battery finishes twice the rate of my girlfriend S4. The only difference is that her S4 is white and mine is black... :-)

I live in São Paulo, Brazil. And, as usual, this kind of recall replace program always forget the third world...

mine has done the same thing. Battery running hot and then my phone was going crazy. I had the battery replaced but unit still heated up my phone. Now verizon sent me a refurbish unit. Lets see if this one heats up. I should have been offered a new one, but because verizon said that it was a tec. issue. So yes I am hoping that this one works.

My s4 battery has been doing this for the past week the only way I can get my phone to turn on again is to plug in the charger

Have had my s4 for three months absolutely love the phone but this issue is ridiculous. My friend has an s4 and I had read on forums it could be down to an expanding battery so I checked it against hers we have had the phone for the same amount of time hers is completely flat and mine has a huge bulge in the middle! The phone always turns itself off and then wont go back on at all or it will go on if you leave it for about half an hour I went to EE and they said I had to do a factory reset or get the phone sent off for a month! I am suprised they didn't know about this problem already!

my S4 gets hot....not warm but hot. Is this caused by the battery? And would it warrant replacement?
