The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been crowned the UK’s most popular handset for the ninth consecutive month as the iPhone 5 slumps to seventh in the uSwitch Mobile Tracker polls.

The latest figures, based on pay monthly sales, handset pre-orders and live searches in January, have shown that whilst the Samsung Galaxy S3 has made it nine straight weeks in pole position, consumer interest in the iPhone 5 has dropped with the iPhone 4S also plummeting five places to tenth.

Further compounding Samsung’s recent rise to smartphone supremacy, the uSwitch figures have revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Ace and the Samsung Galaxy S2 were the UK’s second and third most popular handsets for January respectively, giving the South Korean company a clean sweep of the podium positions.

“The UK’s loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we’ve seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple’s 4S for dust in favour of offerings from LG and Nokia,” Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch said.

Whilst Samsung dominated the UK’s smartphone market in January, the latest figures have revealed that post-Christmas belt tightening has seen a raft of budget Nokia handsets enter the fray, with the Symbian powered Nokia 100 and Nokia C2-01 filling spots four and five respectively. Further down the chart, the LG manufactured Google Nexus 4 has dropped two places to sixth thanks to stock limitations.

“After December’s mobile top ten, which read like a smartphone Santa wish-list, it’s been all-change in January,” Doku said. “Just as we’ve been reading about detoxes and ‘dryathlons’, the mobile market is no stranger to a bit of January belt-tightening, with tech fans looking for sensible deals following a seasonal gadget binge.”

He added: “Nevertheless it will be interesting to see if consumers stick with these sub-£10 deals in the face of exciting new phones coming onto the market.”

With next-months smartphone sales charts expected to see the newly launched first BlackBerry 10 OS powered handset feature, the BlackBerry Z10, Doku has suggested the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 rival could shake things up for its more established Android and iOS competitors.

“With the launch of a revamped BlackBerry in the full-touch flagship Z10 and Nokia’s Lumia 620 looking to disrupt the affordable end of the spectrum, expect some significant movement in the coming weeks – not to mention major smartphone announcements amidst February’s Mobile World Congress.”
