Samsung Galaxy Note 7 could trump Galaxy S7, but only just

Samsung Galaxy 13

The Samsung Galaxy Note 6 – or Note 7, perhaps – is barely superior to the Galaxy S7, apparently.

A new leak has seemingly revealed details about the hardware of Samsung’s upcoming (and still unconfirmed) Galaxy Note 7. An AnTuTu benchmark readout has been posted to Chinese social media site Weibo, purportedly depicting details for a handset with the model number SM-N930V – that’s the Note 7, alright.

According to the leak – first revealed by journalist Steve Hemmerstoffer – the Galaxy Note 7 will run on Google’s Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system, and will feature a 2,560 x 1,440-resolution screen. It’s also set to carry a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip with an Adreno 530 GPU. It seems there will be two cameras (13 megapixel and 5 megapixel), 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage.

If those specs seem familiar, it’s because they’re almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy S7, announced back in February this year. The only real differences are the primary camera, which has gained a single megapixel, and the storage, which has doubled from 32GB to 64GB. Neither changes are indicative of better performance.

There’s also a good chance that the Note 7 will feature a larger display, as is traditional for the Note series. But today’s benchmark doesn’t make mention of screen diameter, so we’re still in the dark here.

It’s worth noting that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 has also been rumoured to feature a Samsung-built Exynos 7420 chip, which may be true for some markets. There’s also been some (admittedly unconvincing) evidence that the phone might ship with Google’s new Android 7.0 Nougat OS – we wouldn't hold our breath.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on 2 August, at a dedicated launch event in New York. Unfortunately, any details we’ve seen to date aren’t guaranteed to be legitimate, so take any early reports with due caution.
