The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could feature an OLED screen made from a plastic substrate, rather than the glass variety currently used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Such a plastic OLED display would be substantially thinner and lighter than the traditional LCD or OLED displays used in other smartphones and tablets.

Weighing only around 50 grams, the plastic substrate OLED screen would be far lighter than the 150g of LCD or 100g of OLED. Also, the 0.5mm thickness of a plastic OLED would make it possible for smartphone manufacturers like Samsung to reduce the thickness of their devices, especially seeing as current handsets have to accommodate LCD and OLED screens, 3.2mm and 1.5mm thick respectively.

The plastic OLED displays would also be much more durable than glass displays, due to it being shatterproof. It could also wield the potential for companies to produce curved display smartphones and tablets.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Features

Rumoured to pack a 5.99-inch Full HD display with a conventional RGB matrix, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is tipped to have the eight-core Exnos 5 Octa CPU the UK version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 currently lacks.

Compatible with 4G LTE and offering a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could be one of the first handsets to showcase Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

Inspired by the success of the HTC One, Samsung could introduce an aluminium body for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The South Korean company was said to be “worried” about the design and build quality of its handsets and plans to make adjustments to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prior to launch.

We reckon a metal Samsung Galaxy S4 will be released before Christmas. Read why here.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was released in October last year, so the 5.5-inch handset is due for an upgrade. We’re sure the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will also have the S-Pen stylus that attracted so many consumers to the original Note duo.
