A patent filing has seemingly confirmed the Samsung Galaxy smartwatch will be branded as Galaxy Gear.

Further confirmation that the Samsung smartwatch will fall under the Galaxy Gear branding has been unearthed in the form of a patent filing for such a device.

The trademark filing describes wearable tech items that are presented in the “form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle” and is capable of functioning as a smart device.

“Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages,” reads the filing. “Wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.”

Filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the patent is the second time a Samsung smartwatch has be referenced under the Galaxy Gear branding umbrella, providing further support for the naming of such a device.

Expected to launch on September 4 at the Berlin-based IFA conference alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch complete with model number SM-V700WATCH/Mobile watch was spotted in an Indian import and export tracker late last month.

Samsung officially confirmed its smartwatch plans back in March, but failed to give any further details as to the device’s specific functions.

“We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” said Lee Young Hee, Vice President of Samsung’s mobile business. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch it definitely one of them.”

If Samsung manages to launch its smartwatch on September 4, it will beat the heavily rumoured Apple iWatch to market and will only have to compete with the newly launched Sony Smartwatch 2.
