Samsung could be preparing to launch a metal Samsung Galaxy S5 in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.
The latest report out of Korea citing “industry sources” suggests that the Galaxy Alpha will be a metal bodied and offer a slightly smaller screen than the S5 flagship.
Samsung trademarked the Samsung Galaxy Alpha name earlier this year, which puts some official weight behind the rumours.
Now, the Korean Herald states that the Galaxy Alpha will be the Samsung Galaxy F device that’s been rumoured for a number of months.
Apparently, the Galaxy Alpha will come with a “premium metal” body, which will enclose a 4.7-inch AMOLED display and an Exynos 5 octa-core processor.
That metal body will supposedly be just 6mm thick, which would make it an extremely thin device, especially when compared to the 8.1mm Samsung Galaxy S5.
Another rumour, albeit from the fairly unreliable ETNews, suggests the Galaxy Alpha may launch as soon as next month, beating the iPhone 6 to market.
Previous rumours for the Galaxy F suggested it would feature a slightly larger 5.2-inch QHD display and metal body, so it seems strange for the latest news to opt for a smaller display than the flagship.
However, rumours suggest the iPhone 6 will launch with a 4.7-inch display, so Samsung might be looking to directly rival Apple’s upcoming flagship before it launches.
Apple is also predicted to launch a larger 5.5-inch version of the next iPhone, currently dubbed the iPhone 6 Air.
Samsung could use the Galaxy Alpha and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4 as direct rivals for the iPhone duo later this year, refreshing its Note line at the same time.
We’ll have to wait and see if these rumours have any weight to them later this year. At least we know the Note 4 will most likely make a formal appearance at IFA 2014 in September.
