Picture-based social bookmarking tool Pinterest is finally expanding its service to allow its users to start buying the things they 'Pin' to their various digital boards.
The company has announced that new ‘Buyable Pins,’ will enable direct purchases of items via a blue button. Eligible products will have a price tag and the chance to swipe through various product options, while the new app will also allow users to checkout using Apple Pay.
The Buyable Pins, an initiative rumoured back in February, are rolling out to the firm's iOS app users in the United States first and foremost, while Pinterest works on getting the service up and running.
The company says it’ll allow stores to set up camp on Pinterest and sell directly with millions of products available from some of the major names in American retail.
Other retailers will be able to make use of the Shopify platform in order to sell their goods. This will open the door to independent or smaller sellers who would likely benefit from Pinterest’s strong community of crafters, cooks and the like.

Interestingly, Pinterest isn’t asking for commission from its partners at this stage, but that seems certain to change once the scheme is fully operational. Adding a buy button and turning Pinterest into a shopping destination has long been heralded as a chance for the firm - valued at around $11 billion - to bring in more revenue.
Taking a slice of the action from punters and/or retailers would appear to be the only way Pinterest would make any cash from the venture, which you can see previewed in the video clip below.
