New Apple TV remote may have touchpad

Apple is reportedly working on a new remote control for its forthcoming Apple TV relaunch.

One thing that’s remained essentially the same over successive revisions of the Apple TV – which first launched in 2007 – is its simple and compact remote control.

According to The New York Times, which cites an anonymous Apple employee briefed on the product, that’s going to change with the next new model.

The main difference is that it will come with a touchpad for scrolling through content. There’ll also be two physical buttons.

The addition of a touchpad in place of the existing control pad would would certainly fit in with Apple’s approach to navigation in its other devices. The likes of the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad both make use of touchpad technology.

The new Apple TV remote, the report claims, will be “slightly thicker” than before. As a point of comparison, the source claims that it will be of a similar thickness to the Amazon Echo speaker.

Many are expecting to see the new Apple TV introduced at Apple’s WWDC in June. Having conducted a number of talks with TV content providers, it’s expected to provide a limited internet TV service with 25 channels.

The new Apple TV is also expected to feature app support and Siri integration.
