LG tablet, phablet, smartwatch and Firefox OS device confirmed by LG executive
An LG executive has confirmed that the South Korean company will be releasing a tablet, phablet, smartwatch and Firefox OS device soon.
Dimitar Valev, the head of LG Mobile Communications in Bulgaria, has confirmed that LG is beavering away at a range of new products, including a tablet and smartwatch.
Despite only having just revealed the LG G2 smartphone, the company will reportedly launch a 6-inch ‘phablet’ in the near future, building on the 5.5-inch screen size of the LG Optimus G Pro.
LG will also be refreshing its tablet line with a new model in the form of the LG G Pad rumoured for an IFA launch. Expected to host a 9.8-inch screen, this tabletwas reportedly spotted passing through the FCC this week.
Early next year, LG will also be launching its own Firefox OS handset, aiming to compete with the ZTE Open which sold out on eBay in the US and UK in three days.
“By the end of the year, LG will [launch] a Firefox OS phone, but I cannot get involved with specific information as [that] depends on our partners,” said Valev. “I guess that will not happen this year, mostly likely in the first quarter of 2014 depending on how the operating system will be necessary.”
Valev also suggested that LG will be building on its LG GD910 Watch Phone with an all new smartwatch arriving next year.
“I think next year we will have a similar product, but I cannot share more details. It is expected first in the United States. In some markets, we will offer a flexible display, but still cannot say in what.”
In July, product filings from the South Korean manufacturer suggest that LG is plotting a new product range including a smartwatch, tablet and eyewear.
The names LG G Watch, LG G Band, LG G Glass, LG G Hub and LG G Link were all listed within the filings.
“Korean newspapers have said we want to make watch phones again,” said Dr Ramchan Woo, LG’s Head of Mobile Planning to TrustedReviews on a trip to Seoul. “We will look at any opportunities that are possible.”
