LG fails to rule out plans for future watch phones

LG could be on the verge of launching a new watch phone, as the company fails to deny reports it has new smartwatch devices in the works.

Speaking with TrustedReviews at the company’s Gasan facility in Seoul, South Korea recently, company executives evaded confirmation of a potentially imminent LG smartwatch release, stating simply “we will look at any opportunities.”

“Korean newspapers have said we want to make watch phones again,” Dr Ramchan Woo, LG’s Head of Mobile Planning said. “We will look at any opportunities that are possible.”

Further hinting that a new LG watch phone could well be in the works, Woo added: “Any sort of opportunity we are looking at. It is not just simply yes, but it’s simply not no. We are looking at different opportunities.”

One of the first companies to push watch phone technologies, LG has been overshadowed in recent months following a flurry of Apple Watch rumours, as well as reports that a Samsung Galaxy Watch is also in the works.

Launched back in 2009, the LG watch phone, also known as the LG GD910, landed as a wrist-mounted mobile with 3G and video calling capabilities paired with an integrated MP3 player and Bluetooth connectivity options. What’s more, giving a nod to future devices, the LG watch phone hosted voice recognition software, providing alternative input methods to its 1.3-inch square touchscreen display.

With LG failing to rule itself out of the imminently expected smartwatch races, recent reports have pegged Apple as launching a smartphone compatible wearable gadget, with a number of Apple iWatch rumours hinting the device could feature a flexible, curved display.

Although some reports have suggested an Apple iWatch release could be “at least three years away,” further reports have suggested Apple is scheduling an iWatch release for later this year with a 100 strong team of designers, engineers and marking experts currently working on the futuristic device.

Remaining cagey on a potential next-generation LG watch phone, an official company spokesperson formally added: “Once we have any new products coming, we will make sure you know at the first stage.”
