Google Search for iOS adds Siri-like voice commands

Google has updated its Google Search iOS app to include smarter voice commands, among other features.

Version 4.0 of the Google Search iOS app is a lot more responsive to your voice commands, in keeping with advances made to the Google Now smart assistant software on Android.

Now, when you hit the microphone button or ask “OK Google” to start a voice search, you can ask informal questions and then follow-up with related requests, somewhat akin to Apple’s own Siri assistant.

The example used in the App Store listing is that you could ask “What’s the weather like?” Then, after receiving appropriate weather information for that day from Google, you could say “How about this weekend?” to switch to a forecast.

Those aren’t the only additions present in Google Search 4.0. It also makes better use of Google Now’s proactive search algorithms. So, it will now tell you when there’s a new article that’s relevant to your interests, or from your favourite blogs. It will also push information your way concerning upcoming trips you might have planned.

Separate to this, and of particular interest here in the UK, is the addition of cricket sports cards to Google Now.

Google has also improved loading speeds for both Google Search and Google Now queries, and has laid on “More beautiful and fluid image results.”

Google Search 4.0 is available to download for free from the App Store right now.
