Google has a second generation Chromebook Pixel in the works, it's been confirmed.

The first Google Chromebook Pixel was launched two years ago with a still-rather-unusual premise. It was a high-end 12.85-inch laptop with a MacBook Pro-rivalling design and a £1,049 price tag, but it ran Google's budget-oriented Chrome OS.

Few would have predicted a successor to this anomaly, but a new report claims we're going to se a Google Chromebook Pixel 2 fairly soon.

Speaking at the TeamWork 2015 event in San Diego this week, Google’s Renee Nieme reportedly mentioned a new Pixel in passing. The OMG!CHROME blog transcribed her comments as follows:

"We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And […] our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out."

Not only does this statement appear to announce the imminent release of a Chromebook Pixel 2, it also confirms the true purpose of the expensive original - not as a consumer device, but as an advanced tool for developers.

Don't expect too many changes for the follow-up device, as the low-selling original still appears crazily over-specced two years later. Indeed, it's quite possible that the original's external design (including a sharp anodized aluminium casing) and its pixel-dense 2560 x 1700 display will remain pretty much unchanged, with a simple internal refresh to a newer chipset.
