Gears of War 2 headlines Xbox Games with Gold for February

Microsoft has announced the free games it is serving up next month for Xbox Live Games With Gold members, with an all-time classic headlining the show.

Gears of War 2 will be free for Xbox 360 and Xbox One (via backward compatibility) from February 16-29 (via Major Nelson). Epic Games’ sci-fi-based third-person shooter was designed by legendary developer Cliff Bleszinski.

The game, which was released in 2008 and earned a 9/10 score from TrustedReviews at the time, is usually $19.99. Now it is part of a package of free games worth $75 (around £52), available during February.

Elsewhere, action RPG Hand of Fate will be available free for the entire month of February, while the side-scrolling brawler Sacred Citadel can be downloaded during the first two weeks of the month.

From February 16-March 15, the stealth infiltration game Styx: Master of Shadows (valued at $29.99) is also a freebie.

Although two of the titles are Xbox One and two are Xbox 360 games, all four can be played on the Xbox One through the Backward compatibility feature.

The launch of the feature alongside the Windows 10-powered Dashboard update doubles the value of Games With Gold for Xbox One owners.
