EA has announced the cover star for FIFA 17, and it’s Germany and Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus.

Reus, wearing his club colours, defeated Anthony Martial of Manchester United, Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard in an online poll that received over three million votes.

The crowning of Reus marks the first time Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has not graced the cover since FIFA 12.

The Argentinian megastar had been joined in recent years by the likes of Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and US women’s national team star Alex Morgan.

However, although EA has not made an official statement on the matter, one could assume Messi’s recent legal troubles may have kept him off the cover.

FIFA 17 will be released on September 29 on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

As well as a completely new Frostbite engine, this year’s iteration brings a cut screen-laden single player campaign mode called “The Journey,” which will see gamers play as a rising star dealing with life on and off the field.

Performances in games will see ‘Alex Hunter’ progress towards moves to bigger clubs, while you’ll also be able to manage his personality and attitude. In that respect its a little bit like FIFA meets Football Manager.

Let's hope you can convince Hunter to pay his taxes, that way he could be on the cover of FIFA someday too.
