Amazon Prime Now one-hour deliveries arrive in second UK city

Prime Now

Amazon has just announced that its Prime Now one-hour delivery service is available in Birmingham.

This marks the first time the service has been available in the UK outside of the capital.

Amazon launched Prime Now in select US cities back in December, and brought the speedy delivery option to Londoners in June this year.

However, Prime Now is on offer across Birmingham and in select postcodes around the city, including Lichfield, Cannock, and Tamworth, making roughly 20,000 different items available for one-hour delivery in those areas.

“Customers in London already benefit from ultra-fast delivery with Prime Now and we are delighted to bring this innovative service to Birmingham and selected postcodes in surrounding areas only five weeks after our London launch,” says Christopher North, Amazon UK’s managing director.

He adds: “Since launching Prime Now, we’ve seen high demand on everything from essentials such as bottled water, coffee and nappies to must-have products such as the latest video games and devices – all available for delivery in less than 60 minutes.”

What's more, Amazon says it plans to introduce the service in “additional UK cities” by the end of the year.

Interestingly, the company also revealed that its fastest London Prime Now delivery to date was a Netgear Wi-Fi Range Extender, which was ordered at 10:32am and arrived with the customer at 10:44am.

How does Amazon Prime Now work?

To take advantage of Amazon Prime Now, you first need to sign up to Amazon’s £79-per-year Prime subscription service, which will also get you access to Amazon Instant Video, Amazon Music, and other perks.

Then you download the Prime Now app, which is available on both iOS and Android devices.

Once that’s done, you can either choose a one-hour delivery for a one-off £6.99 charge, or free delivery with a choice of two-hour, same-day delivery slots between 8am and midnight, any day of the week.

Birmingham deliveries will be shipped from Amazon’s Erdington HQ.

Strange they're in Birmingham, when they're not even covering most of London yet.

I thought the same, I figured they'd cover Greater London first. I guess it's down to population density though, reaching the most people for the least cost.
