Nokia Lumia 920
Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone 8… phone was supposedly leaked today, with some high quality pictures showing it off. The Lumia 920 is a 4.5-inch mobile that’s likely to sit at the top of the Finnish manufacturer’s new WP8 family.
Initially available in grey, yellow and red one of the supposed details that lets this handset reside at the cutting edge is that it incorporates Nokia’s stunning PureView tech.
We already saw the stunning image quality PureView brings to phone cameras when we looked at the Nokia 808 PureView; rather than having a camera attached to your phone, it felt more like having a phone attached to your camera and - under ideal conditions - the quality of shots came surprisingly close to matching that of a dSLR.
The only problem with the 808 was that the rest of the phone was a bit rubbish, sporting a small, low-res screen, poor specs, dreadful performance and outdated Symbian OS. Thankfully, the Lumia 920 isn’t likely to make the same mistake.
For one thing, even its detractors would be hard-pushed to call Windows 8 ‘dated’. For another, Windows 8 Phone already imposes a set of minimum specs, and the Lumia 920 is likely to exceed these. At a guess, we’d say a 1.5GHz dual or even quad-core Snapdragon S4 is a likely candidate, backed by at least 1GB of RAM. As storage is expandable on Windows 8 phones, this isn’t likely to be an issue either.
Our only concern is that the 920’s body in these pics seems incredibly thin to be housing the kind of sensor and optics required for PureView, in addition to its other specs, leading us to wonder if Nokia is just using the brand name and not the tech. However, we can only hope Nokia has really pulled this off, and that it will offer a photography experience somewhat similar to its PureView predecessor.
Mind you, the Nokia Lumia 920 PureView may be facing a little competition from awesome hybrids like the Samsung Galaxy Digital Camera soon.
Nokia Lumia 820
The other entrant revealed in Nokia’s Windows phone lineup is the Nokia Lumia 820, which is likely to be a slightly lower-end Windows Phone 8 smartphone. It comes in a greater variety of colours including purple, aqua, grey, black, white, yellow and red, and is mooted to have a smaller 4.3-inch screen. It’s also likely to stick closer to the base spec you might expect.
Still, if a more colourful option floats your boat the Lumia 820 already has a head start, and the fairly minimalist design does have a certain something.
More details on both the Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView and Nokia Lumia 820 are likely to be revealed at a Nokia event near the beginning of September.
