It is Virgin Media again...

Latest in the long line of controversies surrounding the network are yet more changes to its traffic management policy.

Following on from the sensible measures first introduced last year and the incremental tweaks made just four months back are yet more alterations which this time seem set only to confuse.

Trialling in Preston, Wigan, Blackpool, Camden, Dalston, Enfield and Haringey exchanges Virgin Broadband customers will find the current 4pm to 9pm restricted period become just one of three monitored time zones: 10am to 3pm, 4pm to 9pm and 3pm to 8pm are the new categories - the last of these is solely to monitor uploading.

Yep, it does sound complicated and we're only getting started. Here's the detail:

'Broadband M' customers will find in they are restricted to 900MB, 450MB and 200MB respectively during these times with a capped speed of 1Mbps download/128kbps upload enforced for five hours should they be broken. 'Broadband L' customers have limits of 2.4GB, 1.2GB and 700MB respectively and a matching penalty. Lastly 'Broadband XL' customers have 6GB, 3GB and 1.4GB limits and 5Mbps download/192Kbps upload potential caps.

Now that was unpleasant to write, no doubt unpleasant for you to read and will be even worse for subscribers trying to get their heads around it. Following on from Virgin's worrying talks with the BPI and fairly impressive performance results it seems the ISP is determined to adopt a bad news/good news/bad news policy.

Fingers crossed then for the next release...
