LED backlight technology is nothing new in the professional space (some laptops too) but it looks like consumers are finally going to be able to get their hands on monitors and TVs with this colour enhancing goodness very soon.

Aving.net has the scoop that good old Samsung has come up with the three new displays featuring LED backlights which look set to cause waves in three different categories.

The first is a 15.4 laptop screen with a 1440 x 900 pixel native resolution which measures just 5.8mm thick and uses just only 3.1W of power. The panel also sports a 300cd/m2 brightness and covers 45 per of the NTSC colour gamut.

Secondly – and possibly most excitingly – is a 30in LED backlit monitor with a whopping 2560 x 1600 native resolution (above, pictures courtesy of Aving.net). This monster carries off a 300 cd/m2 brightness, 6ms response time, impressive 900:1 contrast ratio and covers a remarkable 111 per cent of the NTSC colour gamut. Expect Dell execs to be licking their lips at the possibility of rebranding this one.

Finally we have an LED backlit 40in LCD TV. This set has a 1366 x 768 (1080i) native resolution which may seem disappointing but it more than makes up for that with a stunning 100,000:1 contrast ratio which it achieves through ‘local dimming’ LEDs – a system whereby the LEDs are automatically switched off in dark areas of the screen to create perfect blacks (see the comparison above). The TV also manages a 500cd/m2 brightness and super wide 180 degree viewing angle.

So when can we get our hands on all this LED goodness? Unfortunately Sammy went all coy over a specific date but did say we can expect them to hit mainstream product spaces this year. And by 'later this year' I'm hoping for tomorrow... and by 'tomorrow' I mean NOW, NOW, NOW!
