OnePlus 5 Android 8.0 Oreo update could be imminent – report

The OnePlus 5 could be upgrading to Android 8.0 Oreo sooner rather than later, if new evidence is to be believed.

When the OnePlus 5 launched earlier this year, it debuted with Android 7.0 Nougat on board. That’s a solid version of Google’s mobile operating system, and was the newest version available at the time. But Google has moved on, and recently launched the Android 8.0 Oreo update, leaving phone makers scrambling to ready their own version of Oreo to push to consumers.

Samsung is already rumoured to be hard at work on its own update, and it seems rival OnePlus is set to follow suit. A test readout has turned up on mobile benchmarking website Geekbench that shows a OnePlus 5 out in the wild running on Android 8.0.0. The benchmark test results were uploaded on September 25, which means it’s only a fairly recent revelation – but important nonetheless.

OnePlus has already released Android Oreo beta updates for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, but the OnePlus 5 is yet to receive any such treatment. This new revelation could be evidence that the company is already testing the software in-house.

What we hope this means is that OnePlus is readying up a beta version of the software for OnePlus 5 owners to launch tout-de-suite. It’s unlikely that OnePlus has a finalised version ready just yet, because it typically takes many months for companies to finish up their Android OS skin.

Still, this is a positive sign for those of you waiting to chew the delicious Oreo update. In the meantime, check out our Android 8.0 features guide here.

We gave the OnePlus 5 a 4.5/5 score in our review, praising the handset’s fantastic software, great value for money, rapid Dash Charge charging, and the impressive Dual Camera system.
