YouTube app to introduce offline video viewing

The YouTube app is to come in for an offline improvement, with the Google owned company set to bring content downloads to the popular video sharing service.

The first time YouTube videos will be available offline on mobile devices, the upcoming YouTube app update will see offline video viewing made possible, with a selection of content able to be downloaded to smartphones and tablets for up to 48 hours at a time.

“We’re always exploring ways to bring more viewers to your content,” an official YouTube spokesperson said via the company’s official blog. “As part of this effort, later this year we’ll launch a new feature on YouTube’s mobile apps that will help you reach fans — even when they’re not connected to the Internet.”

Although it is currently unclear exactly how these new download and offline features will be implemented and laid out within the app, the YouTube team have revealed the offline options will be introduced in November, letting avid fans fill their devices with content for long journeys ahead of the Christmas period.

The YouTube spokesperson added: “This upcoming feature will allow people to add videos to their device to watch for a short period when an Internet connection is unavailable. So your fans’ ability to enjoy your videos no longer has to be interrupted by something as commonplace as a morning commute.”

Suggesting that further YouTube app updates and feature introductions could be on the cards, they stated: “This is part of our ongoing updates to give people more opportunities to enjoy videos and channels on YouTube mobile.”
