Xbox One live broadcasting still months away

One of the Xbox One’s key features, the ability to broadcast live gameplay, may still be a few months away.

When Microsoft announced its latest console on May 21 last year, one of the headline features was  the ability to record and broadcast gameplay using the Twitch live streaming platform.

This Direct Broadcasting feature wasn’t available at the Xbox One’s launch on November 22, however, giving critics of the pricey console another stick to beat it with.

Now, with fans demanding answers, Twitch itself has spoken up on the matter, revealing that the Xbox One’s gameplay broadcasting feature is still some way away from being ready.

The company recently Tweeted the following: “Xbox One Direct Broadcasting: There is no ETA at this time from Microsoft. Expect a few more months. If we know sooner, we’ll update.”

With Microsoft revealing its target of early 2014 for this streaming feature way back when the Xbox One was announced, this latest information doesn’t quite constitute a delay. But it’s still far from ideal given the performance of the opposition.

The Xbox One’s biggest rival, Sony’s PS4, shipped with Twitch integration. It’s recently been estimated that the console has provided 20 percent of all Twitch traffic, so the ability to stream gameplay footage is clearly the major attraction console manufacturers were hoping it would be.

What’s more, the PS4 was recently crowned the best-selling UK console of 2013, selling significantly more than the Xbox One.
