The latest Windows 10 build brings big news for Android users

The latest Windows 10 Preview build, released today, enables Android users to link their smartphone to a PC, with iPhone support to follow.

The first of many forthcoming features that’ll improve the way Windows 10 interacts with smartphones is focused around the sharing of web links.

After installing the new build, Windows 10 users can link their phone (Settings > Phone), and install an Android app called Microsoft Apps.

This, according to a blog post, “completes the link between your phone and PC and enables one of our first cross device browsing scenarios.”

One the app is installed, you’ll see ‘Continue on PC’ as an option when using the native Share menu within the web browser.

Selecting ‘Continue now’ will see the link ‘magically’ open up on the PC, albeit in the Microsoft Edge browser. Choosing the ‘Continue later’ will store the link in the Action Centre, enabling users to pick it up at their convenience.

Elsewhere in the new preview build (16251), Cortana can now deliver search results from the web without opening the web browser.

Microsoft explains: “For some questions, the Cortana pane will expand automatically, quickly showing you exactly what you need to know. It works with movies, celebrities, stock prices, weather, flight status – you name it!”

Meanwhile, the company is also expanding “Hey Cortana” commands to restart/turn off the PC, lock it or sign out. You’ll need to answer ‘Yes’ to complete these commands.

Finally, the Game Mode, which optimises processing and graphical power for video games, will be enabled by default in some titles.

The 16251 Build is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the fast ring today and will reach consumers within September’s Fall Creators Update
