Top Gear is coming to Netflix – and internationally, too

When Amazon outbid Netflix for Jeremy Clarkson’s new show, it was seen as a huge coup – but it turns out Netflix has its own winning ticket.

Netflix has acquired rights to internationally distribute the BBC’s rebooted Top Gear television programme, Buzzfeed reports.

Most interestingly, it’s said that the new show – set to be helmed by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc – will be available on Netflix outside of the UK. However, it’s not yet clear which specific countries will have access to the new series via Netflix.

“Worldwide I don’t know, as there are pockets of output deals that block all of those things,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, speaking to Buzzfeed.

“We can only control worldwide on things that we can control outright, or things that we take on very early in their life. But multi-territory for sure,” he added.

The BBC plans to begin airing the revamped Top Gear series in May, but Netflix hasn’t confirmed when it will air the show on its own service.

Whatever the case, it certainly heats up the competition between Netflix and Amazon.

Amazon Video is due to air a new show in autumn this year, hosted by ex-Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.

We’ve asked Netflix for comment on Top Gear’s availability in regards to today’s revelations. This article will be update with any response.
