Three eases post-holiday mobile bill blues with free ‘feel at home’ scheme

Three mobile customers can now use their smartphones in 7 additional countries without incurring international charges, the company confirmed on Friday.

The new ‘feel at home’ scheme, which is the first of its kind from a UK network, allows customers to make calls, texts and use data from their monthly allocation while holidaying in several locations around the globe.

Customers travelling to Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, the Republic of Ireland and Sweden will be able to use their phones without coming home to those dreaded post-holiday bills.

As long as users don’t exceed their monthly allocations they won’t be charged, but for those who go a little overboard sending pics and making calls back home, there will be additional costs.

It’s not too excessive though. Three customers will grant those users reduced roaming rates of 7p per text, 20 pence-per-minute calls and 10p per MB when using the web.

Pay as you go customers will also reap the benefits as long as they’ve get credit on their device. They will be charged at the same rate.

Three hasn’t decreed a time limit on the excursions, so the deal will probably prove useful for those Brits who like to head to Australia for six months. With The Ashes test series taking place down under this winter, there’s no better time to get on board with this deal.

The company hasn’t clarified whether additional countries will be added soon, but if it were to add the likes of Spain, Germany France to the mix, Three could be in business.

The company told TechRadar: “Due to the falling data roaming wholesale rates in Europe the exposure of roaming onto other networks in these countries has been significantly reduced and therefore made an offer such as this possible. We have also introduced this offer in countries where we have a sister network.”
