Replacing Sony’s Music Unlimited Service, PlayStation Music will allow Spotify users to stream music through their PS4 or PS3 while playing games.
The PlayStation Music app has been developed as a collaboration between
Sony and Spotify so you get the best experience from the service.
Spotify has over 60 million users, 75 per cent of whom only use the free ad-supported version of the service.
Opening up the app allows you to link your existing Spotify account or create a new one. If you’re signing up afresh, you’ll get a 30 day free Spotify Premium trial, while those who were previously subscribed to Sony Music Unlimited will get a 60 day trial.
To make it easier, if you use the Spotify mobile app you should be able to find your console over your home Wi-Fi network, allowing you to hook the two up without having to enter all your log-in details again.
The PlayStation Music app is split into two sections – Browse and Your Music. The latter is filled with all your playlists, saved music and your followed playlists, just as it is on your other Spotify devices.
Meanwhile in the Browse section you’ll find Spotify-curated playlists, or filter music by genres or moods.

There’s a magnifying glass in the top right hand corner for searching for anything specific.
During play, album art is displayed full screen and you can control PlayStation Music using your controller or your phone using the Spotify mobile app – handy for jukebox-style action.
What we particularly like is the fact there are audio mixing options. PlayStation Music won’t drown out your game audio. Instead, you can adjust the game audio in the settings, and adjust the PlayStation Music levels in the PlayStation button menu mid-game. In that screen you can also skip tracks using L1 and R1.
“PlayStation have gaming exclusivity,” said Murray Pannell, UK Marketing Driector for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in an interview with Eurogamer.
But it’s not clear how long that exclusivity will last though, meaning you could see Spotify on your Xbox One in the future.
“That’s to be decided exactly,” added Pannell. “But certainly for the foreseeable”.
