Sony PS4 Remote Play will extend to Mac and PC from tomorrow

Sony has announced a new PS4 system update, that will extend the Remote Play feature to Mac and PC devices, will roll out tomorrow

PlayStation 3.50 System Software Update (codenamed MUSASHI), which has been in beta, will enable PC users on Windows 8.1 and later and Mac users on OS X 10.10 or later to stream games from the PS4.

Until now, Remote Play has been limited to certain Sony Xperia phones and tablets as well as the PS Vita handheld console.

Gamers will be able to use their DualShock 4 controller via USB cable, once they’ve downloaded an app for the computer.

The feature rivals Microsoft’s move to allow Xbox One gamers to play remotely on Windows devices. However, Sony is going a step further by opening the feature up to Mac users.

The only drawback for PC and Mac users appears to be the performance. The default setting is 540p and 30 frames per second. That can be improved to 720p/60fps, but there’ll be no 1080p gaming.

Elsewhere, after the update gamers will be able to appear offline at any time by holding down the PS Button on DualShock 4 to bring up the Quick Menu.

There’s also a way to be notified when friends come online by pressing Options and select ‘Notify When Online’ when viewing a friend’s profile page.

In the events tab, there’ll also be a chance to schedule gameplay sessions with friends, while the Play Together features the chance to see what all members of a party are playing and easily join in the game.

The update will roll out from tomorrow.
