With 4K being the new buzzword in the TV and home entertainment markets, broadcast giant Sky has suggested it will ‘wait for 4K to be ready before jumping on the UHD bandwagon.
Despite claiming that it will still be one of the first to adopt 4K broadcasts, the subscription based TV provider has remained relatively coy around its 4K plans. Although confirming that it is currently testing the next-gen broadcasting quality, company spokespeople have told TrustedReviews “we can’t put a timeframe” on Sky’s 4K intentions.

Reiterating the company’s tight-lipped standpoint on 4K, Sky’s Creative Director, Paul Fuller stated: “I don’t think we are being cautious [about 4K], it’s just a case of waiting for it to be ready.”
Suggesting that, despite the company’s tentative footing around the subject Sky will be one of the big players when 4K becomes a commonplace feature, Fuller added: “I think there is an absolute appetite for it and it would not surprise me to find that Sky are one of the leading 4K broadcasters when it happens.
“I think it is just a little bit soon right now. You are seeing something that we believe in, and in terms of early adopters, I’m sure Sky will be one of them.”
Claiming that the introduction of 4K will echo the leap from SD to HD, Sky has confirmed that it is still assessing the technology and infrastructure required for 4K before jumping blindly onto the bandwagon.
“There are a lot of questions on the technology side on how exactly 4K will work,” Mike Ruddell, Head of Technology for Sky Sports told us. “We have done some early testing with 4K but it’s too early to say really where we are going to go with that at this stage.”
Steve Smith, Director of Sky Sports Production added: “We know that 4K is out there. We have done some 4K filming previously at test events and I’m sure that with all future technologies we will evaluate it and see where we get involved.”
