Samsung’s next foldable phone will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 2 – report

Samsung is set to announce its next foldable phone next month and a new report reckons it’ll be dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

SamMobile reckons it has the skinny on this one, claiming Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the real name for the oft-rumoured Galaxy Fold 2. Essentially it seems like the ‘Z’ introduced for the Galaxy Z Flip will now identify all of Samsung’s foldable phones.

That makes sense, but would have made more sense if Samsung had adopted nomenclature from the beginning. As for the phone itself, Samsung is expected to offer a more affordable version of the Galaxy Fold, which wasn’t too far short of £2,000.

Recent rumours have suggested the device will have a large 7.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor and 5G connectivity. We should also expect to see Android 10 and a new version of the Samsung One UI underpinning the operating system.

We’re expecting this sequel to the Galaxy Fold to be launched at a Samsung Unpacked event, expected to take place on August 5 alongside the Note 20 series of phones.

Something else we may see is a 5G version of the Galaxy Z Flip, the clamshell foldable Samsung launched in early 2020. A new leak suggests the 6.7-inch foldable inner display and 1.1-inch cover display may be retained.

The report out of China also suggests it’ll arrive with the Snapdragon 865 processor, succeeding the Snapdragon 855+ SoC that powered the original. All in all it appears as if Samsung has no intention of slowing down its expansion into foldable displays.

The company is also thought to be prepping a ‘Lite’ version of the Galaxy Z Flip, but it’s possible that won’t arrive until 2021, perhaps launched alongside the Galaxy S30 range. After some struggles out of the gate, Samsung will be hoping the second-generation foldable devices strike a chord with consumers seeking something new.
