PS4 pre-orders placed after this week might not arrive for console’s launch

PS4 pre-orders placed after this week might not arrive in time for the console’s launch, Sony is claimed to have told retailers.

Update: Sony has refused to to either confirm or deny the claims. In a statement to TrustedReviews a spokesperson for the company stated: “Sony Computer Entertainment Europe does not comment on production and we have no further information to share at this time on our release strategy for PlayStation 4 which is scheduled for launch this holiday season.”

Although PS4 pre-orders will be accepted right up until the console hits store shelves later this year, recent reports have claimed Sony has informed retail partners that unless orders are placed “before next week,” it can’t guarantee a unit will be available on the day of release. If found to be true and you’re after a next-gen console in time for launch, you might need to get your order in before August 5.

With Sony having yet to officially announce any cut off point for pre-order availability, gaming blog CVG suggested that in speaking with sellers, the Japanese manufacturer has confirmed the limitations will affect all UK and European retailers. However, it has been suggested things could be handled differently in the US and Japan.

Despite launch day units potentially not being available for gamers who went to the effort of ordering their Xbox One rival in advance, Sony will stock retail outlets at release in a bid to generate further day-one interest around its PS3 follow-on.

At present a confirmed PS4 release date has yet to be announced beyond Sony’s somewhat vague confirmation that the console will touch down during the “2013 holiday season.” It is believed that a finalised PS4 release date will be revealed during Sony’s Gamescom 2013 press conference on August 20.
