Project Lightning is Twitter’s master plan to own live events

Twitter is planning to introduce a new media-rich product, which the company hopes will make it the perfect destination to follow live events and breaking news online.

The forthcoming tool, coined Project Lightning (as reported by Buzzfeed), will contain dedicated human-curated sections for notable happenings; featuring tweets, photos and videos.

Events like the NBA Finals, Oscars or important news stories will feature in Project Lighting, which could be represented by a lightning bolt within the firm’s mobile apps and portal.

Tapping the bolt would lead users to a list of events, similar to the firm’s trending topics, and expanding the event of choice will reveal the full-screen view packed full of curated content users can swipe through. If folks decide to ‘follow’ the event, they’ll see the curated content show up in their timelines too.

Twitter wants its partners in the media industry to contribute official content, including things like behind the scenes videos, trailers and preview clips. Human editors, hired by Twitter, will pull everything together.

The idea is designed to capitalise on Twitter’s status among loyalists as the go-to place to experience real time events, in order to attract new users to join the service – perhaps the firm’s longest standing problem. With that in mind, everything is also embeddable across the web.

“It’s a brand-new way to look at tweets,” says Kevin Weil, the project manager. “This is a bold change, not evolutionary.”

In further news, it appears Twitter attempted to claim a huge scalp to kick off Project Lightning. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the company was in the running to obtain the right to the first ever streaming-only NFL game.

The firm was eventually outbid by Yahoo, which will screen the Jacksonville Jaguars vs Buffalo Bills game in October. Twitter may return to the fray, given the in-game highlights rights are still up for grabs.
