Price of 4K TVs to halve within a year retailer claims

The price of 4K TVs could be cut in half within a year, a senior buyer at a leading UK electronics retailer has predicted.

With the first 4K TVs now on sale in the UK, retailer John Lewis has suggested that the lofty price tags associated with 4K TVs could soon become a thing of the past, with 4K models to cost as much as current HD sets within just 12 months.

“We are going to see big steps in 4K next year,” Jonathan Marsh Head Buyer at John Lewis said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.

He added: “At the moment there is a premium associated with 4K and we have seen that since launching the first 4K TVs a couple of months ago. However, as we’ve seen these technologies mature, they have come down in price and become much more affordable very quickly.

Speaking during the recent unveiling of the TV Gallery by John Lewis, Marsh stated: “I think that it will be around the end of next year that we see 4K come in at the sort of price points that we would hope to see it so around £1,500 to £2,000, potentially maybe halving.”

A key theme to this year’s CES and IFA tech conferences, a number of major manufacturers have already launched their 4K TVs in the UK, with LG, Samsung, Philips, Sony and Toshiba having already got in on the Ultra HD act.

As well as coming down in price, Marsh has predicted that 4K TVs will be made available across a broader rage of screen sizes.
