Parasite is making people hungry for Ram-Don, according to Google

Academy Award-winning movie Parasite has sent Korean food searches soaring, according to Google.

The Best Picture winner’s search success was shared in a blog post by Google communications and public affairs manager in Korea, Eunah Lee, this morning.

According to Google, searches for the popular noodle dish in the movie – Ram-Don, also known as jjapaguri – have gone through the roof. Searches for “ram-don recipe” are up more than 400% across the world, while searches for “Asian supermarket” are up more than 350%.

The majority of people craving steak and noodles are based in Denmark, the US, Canada, Singapore and Australia.

“There could be opportunities for enterprising Korean restaurateurs in places from Copenhagen to Canberra”, notes Lee.

Parasite was the most-searched movie worldwide in the week that followed the Oscars. The film actually saw an 857% jump in searches and the rush is yet the die down.

That’s a big leap, after being the third most-searched Best Picture nominee behind 1917 and Jojo Rabbit in the week running up to the awards ceremony.

Search interest for Best Director-winner Bong Joon Ho also saw an increase on the day of the event.

Google recorded a 2000% increase in searches for the director during the ceremony, while Bong sent searches for “Martin Scorsese” soaring in Korea when he quoted one of the fellow director’s lines.

Bong’s Korean American translator Sharon Choi actually took the fifth most-queried spot with the question: “Who is Bong Joon Ho’s translator?” The translator and filmmaker quickly captivated Twitter as Parasite became the first non-English language film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Interest in Korean cinema in general has also gone up since the historic win. Searches for “Korea” and “film” have increased by more than 47% in the past month, peaking for the first time in a year in the week that followed the Oscars.
