OnePlus confirms OxygenOS release date for March

OnePlus has just announced its fledgling OxygenOS Android ROM will be launching as soon as next month.

During an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on Reddit, the OnePlus team revealed the OS would be coming in March.

That’s not all, however, as the team also confirmed the update wouldn’t be offered over the air.

What this means is that users who want to enjoy OxygenOS won’t have the update automatically beamed to their device.

Instead, they’ll have to manually flash it, which will likely result in many users not upgrading.

“For the OnePlus One, it will likely not be an OTA, but rather a choice for users who want to try something new and are willing to flash it themselves,” wrote Carl Pei, co-founder and global director of OnePlus.

The company also confirmed that OxygenOS would not be able to be flashed onto non-OnePlus handsets.

On the bright side, this means that the ROM will be optimised for OnePlus handsets, improving performance.

“We’re optimising the stack specifically for the POP hardware so you may have the best experience,” continued Pei.

Additional details were also revealed about the OS, including the fact that it would be very close to ‘stock Android’, with a few additional features for ‘convenience’.

“We’ll optimise it for our unique hardware and have added features like the ability to modify the quick settings tile layout and quick unlock,” wrote Arz, the lead UI/UX designer for OxygenOS.

“They’re not necessarily groundbreaking features but, especially for our first release, we just want to focus on small optimisations that make your life easier.”

Finally, Reddit asked whether the OnePlus Two would use the Snapdragon 810 chip. “Nice try,” wrote Pei. Damnit…
