Oculus Rift price revealed as pre-orders open

Just as Oculus Rift pre-orders open for business, the company has finally revealed the pricing for its VR headset.
It’s been over three years since the first Oculus Rift was launched on Kickstarter, but now official pre-orders are live, it suddenly feels tangible.
And for the first time, we know how much an Oculus Rift is going to set you back when it launches later this year.
According to the Oculus website, the Rift price is set at $599. As for the UK pricing, you’re looking at £499.
That’s a lot, lot more than the $350 ballpark figure that Luckey originally provided.
Of course, the way the pre-orders work, you don’t need to pay anything up-front to get your hands on one.
Instead, Oculus VR will charge you when the Rift actually ships, which will be in March 2016. Or April 2016. Depending on which screen you’re looking at.

All pre-orders come with Eve: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale bundled in for free, along with an Xbox One controller.

Oculus has confirmed that in the box, you’ll get the headset with built-in headphones and mic, sensor, and an Xbox One controller. You’ll also get what’s being called an Oculus Remote.

This is a new input device that will help you navigate VR experiences. It will let you browse the Oculus Store, explore Oculus Video’s 360-degree video content as well as other games and entertainment.

Basically, it’s for non-gamers among the early VR adopters.

You’ll need the following hardware in order to run the Oculus Rift:

  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
  • Processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • Memory: 8GB+ RAM
  • Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • Input: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
  • Operating System: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

In order to see if your rig is compatible you can use the new Oculus Compatibility Tool

There will be bundles offering an Oculus Ready PC and a Rift available for pre-order in February, which will start at $1499.

“This is just the beginning. We can’t wait to share more about the incredible games and experiences coming to Rift this year. Touch will ship in the second half of the year and will unlock entirely new interactions that let people take their VR experiences further than ever before,” added Oculus VR.
